Visit by IAEA delegates to CIBA and NUS Physics, 26 March

Ms Najat Mokhtar (middle) and delegates from IAEA visited CIBA and NUS Physics

NUS Physics was pleased to host Deputy Director General Ms Najat Mokhtar, together with Programme and Partnership Officer Ms Noura El-Haj and Fusion Science Technical Lead Dr Matteo Barbarino, from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 26 March. The delegates visited the Centre for Ion Beam Applications (CIBA) and NUS Physics to explore potential collaboration in research and technical development.

Discussions highlighted opportunities under IAEA programmes such as the Coordinated Research Projects and the Technical Cooperation Programme, and how Singapore-based research can contribute to regional and global impact.

Professor Jeroen van Kan, Director of CIBA, introduced CIBA and presented its advanced accelerator-based research capabilities, including the high-resolution proton beam microscope. CIBA’s work spans a wide range of areas, including cultural heritage, quantum materials, materials characterisation, fusion, and radiobiology, alongside ongoing international collaborations and training activities.

The visit opened up promising directions for future joint initiatives, particularly in developing standardised solutions for nuclear instrumentation and data acquisition systems to benefit the global research community.
