Shermine Ho [PhD 2026]

When I first joined NUS Physics as an undergraduate in 2015, I never really knew where I would go with it. I enjoyed it, but it certainly wasn’t something I thought I would be doing for a living more than a decade later.

I view my undergraduate days fondly, with many opportunities to participate in department-organised events that exposed me to the physics community. Particularly, I recall attending the Germany Immersion Trip (GIT) in 2018 at the end of my third year, where we were introduced to some of the most modern research in a few German research institutes. On this trip we were engaged in activities and brought to tours that would never have been possible in Singapore, like a nuclear reactor tour in Munich (exciting!), and a guided tour through the Pfeiffer manufacturing site at Goettingen (exciting for anyone working with vacuum systems—for instance, me). Looking back, this trip has definitely contributed to my choice to explore more of experimental physics.

Also in my undergraduate years, I had the opportunity to explore my other interests further. I had taken a minor in Philosophy (actually, I’m just short of one module—Introduction to Logic—to obtain a second major), and that afforded me a perspective of physics from the world outside of science. On top of various other factors (including, of course, personal interest in the first place), it convinced me that I did in fact want to know more about how modern science is performed and contributes to this field of knowledge. For a fresh graduate, what better way to do so than to pursue a PhD?

I think the best way of summarising the pursuit of a PhD in general is “constant firefighting”. There are always problems to solve in the lab, big or small, and ingenious ways to do so. While the proposed solutions may not always bear fruit, they always bring useful skills and knowledge.

The greatest opportunity I’ve been granted in NUS Physics is to put out these fires with like-minded people—my supervisors, Asso Prof Andrivo Rusydi and Assoc Prof Tok Eng Soon, colleagues and lab mates, and even fellow PhD candidates and postdocs in other groups who had great ideas to solve problems that I’d mentioned in passing. It is incredibly rare to meet people who share similar interests, and even more so to meet so many of them.

As I inched my way towards the end of my PhD journey, even the administrative staff from the department celebrated my victories with me. As Maggie and Ben said to me, “You’re done! I don’t have to see you again!”, but I’m sure you will, just not because I need help submitting yet another form!

I used to think that my years in the university would be utterly pedestrian as I wasn’t involved in any formal groups or extra-curriculars. Now, as I reflect about the things I’ve done in NUS—how many people get to be researchers, teachers, students, and more at the same time—that is far from being a pedestrian.

Currently, I’m a scientist with the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, and I’m working on something that is quite different from my PhD projects—part of the fun in research lies in finding new problems to solve!
