Congratulations, Class of 2025!
You could smell it in the air! The celebratory mood, the joy of achievement, the acknowledgement of hard work—it’s graduation time yo!
17 July marked the commencement for our physics graduates! Adorned in their academic regalia and marching on to receive their scrolls, this day bore witness to the fruits of their labour, sweat and tears. 🎓
Having a passion in physics must certainly be a great motivation in the academic journey of students, many of whom will be pursuing higher studies.
“Bella loves physics since the beginning. For years, studying physics in NUS I will say is amazing for her. She is always learning something new. She also has the chance to go on a trip to Germany which gives her new ideas for further study and physics research and I’m so happy,” Mdm Mahestu reflected on her daughter’s journey in studying physics.
Though Mr Chang Yng wished his son could further his theoretical study and research locally, he acknowledged his son’s passion in pursuing physics overseas. “It is good Hexiang has found his passion and can now be more focused on the field he wants to go into. He has a full scholarship to study in the US and it will be another five years minimum for him.”
Student Giorgio Canalella paid tribute to the culture of support at NUS Physics that has facilitated his learning journey. “I’m from Italy and I’m an international student and it was my first time in Singapore. What I was really blessed with from the physics community here was everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Our professors are always very helpful. It is a place where a lot of smart minds collaborate but there is no arrogance. Communication is smooth and there is very little formality. It is a place where I could express myself even though I come from a very different culture.”
Echoing the same sentiments is Juan-Yi Pon. “Here people are excited about what they are doing, their work, their research, their studies. I feel encouraged and supported by the department, the professors and my friends, to do what I want knowing that people will support me. One of my fondest memories was the FYP presentation. Everyone was excited and provided support to one another. I felt really comfortable delivering my presentation. I am also thankful to have the chance to travel to Spain for the PLANCKS competition that was sponsored by the department.”
Indeed, NUS Physics strives to be a pillar of support for students in their academic pursuit and also hopes to provide the opportunities for students to link up with external collaborators and the real world. This is the case for Fu Kailin who is currently interning at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). She has been offered sponsorship by NCCS for further study and research and is all excited about it. “My FYP accessor informed me about an internship opportunity at NCCS. I would never have imagined this route for myself as I only took biophysics and medical physics in my final year. I would miss working on assignments and solving problems together with the friends I found here and also hanging out with them.”
As Prof Gong Jiangbin, Head, Department of Physics, remarked during the graduation lunch, it was a “tough four years” for students. Physics is a difficult subject but he believed the fundamental training will be valuable to students who have also become resilient over the years.
Once again, NUS Physics extends its heartfelt congratulations to all its graduates for their passionate pursuit of physics and remarkable demonstration of resilience. They will now move forth to shape their own future with a purpose given each opportunity amid unique challenges of our times.
