Second Major in Physics
The Department of Physics offers a Second Major in Physics which comprises of courses related to the fundamentals of physics as well as its applications.
The second major is not offered with a primary major in Physics or a minor in Physics.
Programme requirements
1. One compulsory Level 1000 course:
- PC1101 Frontiers of Physics*
*Students with a primary major in CDE may double count ESP1111 towards PC1101, PC2020 towards PC2031, PC2130B towards PC2130.
2. Two compulsory level 2000 courses:
- PC2174A Mathematical Methods in Physics I **
- PC2193 Experimental Physics and Data Analysis
**Students with major requirements in MA courses may double count MA2002^a or [MA1521+MA1522]^b or MA1505^c or MA1508E^d or [MA1511+MA1513]^e towards PC2174A.
^a. Must complete MA2001 as well, recommended to take MA2104 or MA2311
^b. Recommended to take MA2104 or MA2311 or self-study multivariable calculus
^c. Must complete MA1508E or MA1513, recommended to take MA1512
^d. Must complete MA1505 or MA1511, recommended to take MA1512
^e. Recommended to take MA1512
3. Any two of the following courses:
- PC2031 Electricity and Magnetism I*
- PC2032 Classical Mechanics
- PC2130 Quantum Mechanics I*
- PC2135 Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
*Students with a primary major in CDE may double count ESP1111 towards PC1101, PC2020 towards PC2031, PC2130B towards PC2130.
4. Any five of the following courses (at least 12 Units must be at Level 3000 and above):
- PC21xx/PC31xx/PC32xx/PC3991/PC42xx/PC4991 except PC3289, PC4288 and their variants
Note:
- A maximum of 4 units of UROPS course may be used to fulfi l the Physics second major requirements.
- Only one of PC3991 and PC4991 can be used to fulfi l the second major requirements.
