Congratulations, Class of 2026!
21 July was Commencement Day for NUS Physics. Physics graduates, adorned in their academic regalia, eagerly awaited the moment they would receive their scrolls on stage at the University Cultural Centre. The occasion marked the culmination of their years of unwavering perseverance, dedication and learning.
An afternoon Graduation Tea on the same day, hosted by the NUS Physics Society, brought together graduates, their families and academic staff. Graduates had the opportunity to reconnect with one another, share memories, express their gratitude and commemorate this significant milestone with their professors.
Welcoming the graduates and their families, Professor Gong Jiangbin, Head of NUS Physics, congratulated the Class of 2026 on their achievements. He encouraged the graduates to embrace the future with confidence as they embarked on the next chapter of their academic or professional journeys. He also reminded them that the knowledge, skills and experiences they had acquired at NUS Physics would serve them well wherever their paths lead.
The afternoon was filled with light-hearted moments as graduates gathered at the photo booth to capture memories with their classmates, families and professors. Each graduate also received a commemorative photograph and a souvenir prepared by the NUS Physics Society.
A lively Kahoot! game rounded off the celebration, adding fun and a nostalgic touch. Graduates were invited to identify laboratory equipment from partially hidden images and guess which professors had written particular equations or said some memorable quotes. The quiz sparked plenty of laughter and fond memories as graduates reminisced about the experiences that had defined their time at NUS Physics.
Once again, NUS Physics congratulates the Class of 2026 and wishes all graduates every success and fulfilment in the years ahead!

Ho Pei Ling

Looking back, one of the best decisions I made at NUS Physics was taking a leap of faith to attend the summer school at Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) without knowing anyone. I wanted to see if research was the right path, and while I ultimately realised it wasn’t, the experience was invaluable for figuring that out. It was a rare opportunity to peek into the labs at SJTU and attend lectures by international professors showcasing diverse areas of physics research, alongside students from around the world. Beyond academics, exploring Shanghai with newfound friends made the trip fun and unforgettable. While the analytical mindset I built here has been invaluable, it’s the unique global experiences and friendships made that I’ll remember most.

Looking back at my undergraduate experience, it was meaningful and fulfilling. Back in 2016, I was inspired by Prof Sow Chorng Haur to join NUS physics. Through learning physics, I could better appreciate various natural phenomena governed by physics. Through organising and attending various physics events as academic director of NUS Physics Society, I had various opportunities to interact with other physics enthusiasts like me. I would like to shoutout to Dr Sharon Lim Xiaodai for guiding me patiently in laboratory experiments, Mr Tan Jyh Harng for supportively teaching me how to operate the atomic force microscope, and Prof Sow Chorng Haur for looking out for me and giving me the chance to present at the Science Summer Institute 2026.

Looking back, one of the most meaningful parts of my NUS Physics journey was my internship/UROPs/UPIP/FYP at the Centre for Quantum Technologies. It gave me valuable opportunities to grow as a researcher, including traveling to San Diego and Abu Dhabi to present my work and receiving the Alice Prize. I am especially grateful to Professor Alex and my postdoc mentor for their guidance, encouragement, and support throughout the journey. Their mentorship strengthened my interest in quantum technologies and gave me greater confidence in pursuing research. I am also thankful to NUS Physics for providing the foundation and opportunities that made these experiences possible.

Looking back, my four years at NUS Physics have taught me far more than equations and problem-solving. They have shaped how I deal with uncertainty and given me countless opportunities to grow as an individual. I am especially grateful to the professors, lecturers, and friends who made the journey more enjoyable and meaningful. One memorable moment occurred during our Experimental Physics course, when my lab partner and I discovered several hours into data collection, that our phones had interfered with the Rutherford experiment. Experiences like this made my undergraduate journey memorable despite the challenges. Above all, I have learned that it is important to find joy in the process of learning physics.
Loo Jia Wei
Looking back, our time in NUS Physics was, paradoxically, both long and short. It feels like only yesterday when we met new faces in our orientation groups who became the close friends walking alongside us. From locking ourselves in our rooms with just our pens and paper to solve countless differential equations, waiting hours in the laboratory for the alpha radiation detector to click, to the many nights formatting reports, the learning never stopped. Yet, going through each day, week, and semester never felt unbearable. From yearly steamboats and Mookata meet-ups with peers and professors, to the strolls between Frontier and classrooms with friends, these cherished moments made the long eventful journey flew by in the blink of an eye.

Jerrome Ng

Looking back, my time in NUS Physics has been an invaluable combination of education and experiences. From planning and leading Physics Society’s events to exploring the world on my exchange to Göttingen, Germany, NUS has provided me with many opportunities to learn and grow outside lecture halls. What made these years truly special were the heartfelt friendships developed. Movie nights and hotpots with course mates, exploring new countries together during overseas exchange, these are chapters I will cherish for life. Studying physics has changed how I view the world. My minor in Medical Physics has allowed me to branch into healthcare, giving me the confidence to step into my next chapter and make a meaningful impact in the lives of others

Su Tianshui

Looking back, one of my fondest memories at NUS Physics was joining the Germany Immersion Trip to Göttingen and Munich, led by Prof Osipowicz and Prof Englert. Generously subsidised by the department, the trip allowed us to experience physics, history and culture all in one. At Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, I attended an electromagnetism lecture where live demonstrations made abstract laws tangible. Just as meaningful were the people I met: I got to know junior students who later joined Physics Society and worked alongside me, while also reconnecting with friends who were then on exchange. Among everything, hiking to Brocken with my batchmates remains a vivid reminder of the community and friendships that have defined my time at NUS Physics.

Looking back, my four-year journey at NUS Physics proved far more fruitful than I could have imagined. The richness of this experience cannot be fully captured in this short write-up. That richness came from the guidance of dedicated educators and the research and learning opportunities offered through my muon project, UROPS, final-year project, core modules and exchange courses. A question that stayed with me was how the education I received and the experiences I gained here could prepare me to contribute through my chosen field of nuclear engineering. Together, these experiences shaped the way I approach scientific problems and prepared me for the work ahead. For all that the department has given me, I will remain deeply grateful.

Looking back, those four years were not always easy, but they taught me far more than equations and experiments alone. Physics trained me to sit with uncertainty, question assumptions, and keep working even when the answer was not immediately clear. I am eternally grateful to the lecturers, mentors, and friends who supported me through the more challenging periods, and for the opportunities to explore ideas beyond the classroom, including research and scientific writing. Although my journey did not always unfold as I expected, it has shaped the way I think, strengthened my resilience, and confirmed my desire to continue learning and contributing to physics in the years ahead.
