Title: STM Monitoring of Single Molecules
Abstract:
The ability to probe and understand matter at its most fundamental
level is crucial to the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
The Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) was initially used primarily
to create nice pictures of surfaces. Later, the implementation of
new modes of scanning also enabled other experiments, including
chemical and spectroscopic measurements and manipulations to be
carried out on single molecules. Indeed, the field of single-molecule
monitoring using STM is very diverse. This project will look into
the STM topographic and spectroscopic measurements of single molecules.
Their principles, as well as some research work carried out in these
aspects will be reviewed.
Speaker II: Mr.Toh Ping Yong
Title: X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy
Abstract:
X-ray absorption methods are used extensively to investigate the
electronic and chemical structure of materials, and the various
absorption techniques include Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure
(NEXAFS) and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). These
techniques utilise the absorption of x-rays by the atom and from
the x-ray absorption spectrum, we are able to find out many details
about the atoms and their neighbouring atoms.
