Johan R. C. van der Maarel received his PhD in physical chemistry from Leiden University, the Netherlands in 1987. His doctoral work was on the structure and dynamics of water and aqueous solutions. He then worked at Leiden University as lecturer in physical chemistry, before joining the department of physics of the National University of Singapore as associate professor in biophysics in 2004. In his research, he uses the principles of physics and chemistry and the methods of mathematical analysis and computer modelling to understand the structure, dynamics and functional mechanisms of biological systems and he applies this knowledge to the design of nano-devices of biotechnological importance. |
