FAQ From the Students who wish to obtain the SCMC minor.
1. Does the School of Computing manage our SCMC program?
No. This is a common mistake. The SCMC programme is managed by the Science Faculty. In particular, the Physics Dept is tasked to oversee the smooth implementation of the SCMC programme. The School of Computing participates in the lecturing of 2 IT modules.
2. Who will award me the SCMC minor when I graduate?
Faculty of Science.
3. What is the focus of SCMC?
The SCMC minor focuses on the use of computational tools for scientific applications, and the advanced high performance computing for handling large-scale computations. The package also addresses the management and effective use of data that modern business and computer technology can produce, and provides a platform for Science students to develop their communication skills and talents. In addition, the minor programme provides a basic foundation for coping with the technological changes, and underpins the ability of life-long learning for computing knowledge.
4. Is SCMC minor going to benefit me?
Certainly yes. During the design phase, we have considered
(i) the background of students,
(ii) the needs of students in their future employments,
(iii) the ever-changing trends of technology and how our graduates can catch up in this IT world,
(iv) the communication aspects where we also have to nurture Science students with the oral and written communication skills. As such the SCMC programme will assume nothing from you. To ensure that every student can follow the lectures, our teaching will be incremental. Upon completion of the SCMC minor, you will be confident to write computer programs, analyse massive computation data, publish information on internet, carry out high performance computing and computer aided design. More importantly, your communication talents will be fully developed. You must know that in addition to technical competence, communication skill is also very important in your future career.
5. I know nothing about computer. Will I be at a disadvantage position?
This is a common question asked every year. As I have said before, we assume nothing from you. We will teach you from the scratch. So there will not be any disadvantage for you.
6. I do not have a computer at home. Do I have to buy one?
Another common question. The answer is no. There are abundant computers in the Science Faculty. We have more than 200 computers in the laboratories, and more than 100 computers in CBLC. In addition, you can also use the computers in libraries and computer center.
7. Do I have to apply for a commercial account so that I can access to internet and can send email to my lecturer from my house?
No. All students are given a free computer account and you can use it to surf internet and to send emails. Why waste money to subscribe to commercial accounts when you are given the free one.
8. How long will it take me to complete the SCMC minor?
With proper planing, the SCMC can be completed in 3 semesters, i.e., 1 and a half year. But I foresee that most of you will use 2 years to complete the SCMC minor.
9. There are SCC and IT modules in the SCMC programme. Which departments will be teaching? Which ones should I take?
All the six SCC modules will be taught by the lecturers from Science Faculty. The two IT modules will be taught by the School of Computing. You should take the modules which interest you. To be awarded the SCMC minor, you need to pass six modules (any two modules from each level).
10. Can I obtain more info on the SCC modules, such as lecture time and exam time?
For such important information I will adopt a single point of contact just in case of any change of the information.
The SCMC information is available at URL: http://www.physics.nus.edu.sg/~scmc/index.html
The lecture time table and examination time table are available at URL: http://www.science.nus.edu.sg/Undergraduate/Curriculum/
As for university education, you must also know some life surviving skill such as how to search for on-line information.

12. When can I register for practical and tutorial classes?
Your lecturer will find out from you the common free time slots during the first lecture. He/She will base on the number of students to decide the number of tutorial and practical classes and their time schedule. You will have to select your choice on a prescribed form handed out by your lecturer.
