Physics of Nanostructures

Nanostructures refer to systems with characteristic sizes in the range of 1-100 nm in certain dimensions.  They possess physical properties quite different than that of single atoms or molecules at one end, and bulk materials on the other.  They could play novel roles in various applications.  After brief reviews of quantum mechanics and solid state physics, the fabrication and probing methods of nanostructures will be introduced.  Then, we will discuss several nanostructural systems: quantum-wells and superlattices, quantum dots, nanotubes and nanowires, clusters, molecular electronics, and nano-magnetic structures.  In the last few weeks, each group of students will give a presentation on a specific topic based on literature studies or students' research works.
