Gateway to Special Relativity

Welcome to Gateway. I am Dr. Möbius, the Chief Researcher of The Gateway Institute. After years of research and development, my team and I have perfected the revolutionary SOL Control System which is capable of slowing down the speed of light! In fact, with this technology, we can change the speed of light to any desired value. At this point in time, you may question the benefits of such a machine.

Before this remarkable invention, few men have ever succeeded in fully comprehending the Special Theory of Relativity. The theory predicts that motion results in many effects but they are only observable at near-light speeds. Since the speed of light under normal circumstances is an astounding 299, 792, 458 metres per second, such changes are hardly detectable at our everyday speeds.

Our purpose for developing this machine was to enable people to better visualise the effects of high-speed travel and enhance their understanding of the theory, without the need for complicated equations, lengthy explanations and confusing diagrams. By bringing down the speed of light, we will be able to personally witness relativistic effects in everyday situations, something that would be unimaginable even to Einstein himself!

Now, we shall proceed on with the tour where we will encounter the three main effects of Special Relativity. For today, the speed of light will be set to 5 metres per second.

Lorentz Contraction

Aberration of Light

Hoped you enjoyed the tour. Having experienced the many strange effects of Relativity, you may be wondering what practical applications they might have. We are just beginning to realise the many potential benefits of a low speed of light, and are pleased to announce the new and very popular service:

Gateway Service

Look Young, Feel Young, Stay Young!

For those of you interested in an insider view of this project (perhaps you would like to join our team!), you may want to check out the information booth round the corner.
