CM3265  Polymer Chemistry II

This module is targeted at 3rd year students.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Study the chemistry of Step-growth, free-radical, ionic and coordination Polymerizations.

Understanding the kinetics of polymerization in each of the above processes.

Study the polymer degradation and stablization processes.

SYNOPSIS

I. Brief view of polymer science.

II. Step-growth polymerization - mechanism, molecular weight control, synthetic routes and kinetics.

III. Free-radical polymerization - mechanism, kinetics and copolymerization.

IV. Ionic polymerization - Anionic & Cationic polymerizations, the mechanism, living polymerization, copolymerization & kinetics

V. Coordination polymerization - catalysts & mechanism

VI. Polymer degradation & stabilization - Degradation mechanism, stabilization methods.

SYLLABUS

The mechanistic understandings of step-growth polymerization, free-radical polymerization, ionic polymerization and coordination polymerization.

Kinetics of the polymerization processes.

Polymer degradation and stabilization.
