Merapi Volcano, South Java, Indonesia
Steam is emerging from the crater of the Gunung Merapi, Java’s most feared volcano, located north of Yogyakarta. Dark patches on top of the volcano indicate deposition of fresh lava in contrast to the slopes which are well vegetated. The bluish lines radiating down the slopes are river channels filled with pyroclastic deposits of previous eruptions. Such channels are dangerous because the volcanic deposits, after intense rain, turn into fast mudflows (lahars).
