Mekong River, Lao PDR

The Mekong flows through a folded structure which partly controls its geometry as shown in near right-angled bends. As the Mekong cut through this structure, rocks became exposed in its channel forming rapids, and the river forced its way through constrictions. South of the Mekong, the near horizontally-bedded rocks are being eroded by steep-sided small rivers. The geological structure also shows up in contrasting colours: red vegetated areas and grey-green mostly bare sectors.
