This is the area to the north of the Angkor Complex, extending to the range of hills which are densely forested as shown by the dark red colour. Isolated small hills occur south of the main range. Patches of cleared ground and numerous ponds for holding irrigation water are scattered over the area.

Sandstone from these hills was transferred along the Siem Reap River for the construction of the temples of Angkor.
