Internship Opportunities

Interested applicants should send a full CV to Dr Sean O’Shea at s-oshea@imre.a-star.edu.sg

We have begun an interdisciplinary project (AFM experiments, theoretical modelling and biomedical applications) in order to understand and apply lipid bio-membranes incorporating specific protein functionality. We are seeking at least 2 fresh undergraduates to
  - apply for Research Officer positions at IMRE,
- one position is theoretical and one experimental,
- the applicant must have or expect to have an upper 2nd or 1st class degree.

a) For the theory position : We have started Molecular Dynamics modelling of the membrane structures with an aim to understand the forces acting within the membranes, how proteins embed within the lipid, and what is the role of the water solvent. You will assist in the application of coarse grained MD studies of simple polymer chains and lipid membranes in water, and if necessary work to develop analytical theory.

b) For the experimental position : You will work with a team to implement the lipid biomembrane technology (i.e. the biology aspect) into a working sensor or drug detection platform (i.e. the physical science aspect). This effort is very broad and encompasses aspects such as fabrication of thin film membranes using Si MEMS technology; fabricating special tips for AFM probing of the biomembranes; packaging and testing biomembrane based sensors for smell; using AFM in liquid environments to mechanically probe the biomembrane dynamic response. The specific task assigned would depend on the applicant’s skills and background.

In both cases the successful applicant would be working under the supervision of a senior researcher.
