Mandatory Regulations

A) LICENCE

1) Radiation licence


Licence is mandatory for some classes of radiation equipment and users (yearly).

2) Pressure System


Inspection and licence is required for certain pressure system (once in 2 years).

There is a Factories (Examination and Test of Pressure Vessels) (Exemption) Order that specifies that air receiver below 0.5 bar or the product of its safe working pressure and volume does not exceed 100bar-litre is exempted from section 39 (4) to (8) of the Factories Act.

Employees who have to work on pressure systems should be properly trained on the potential hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Boilers and pressure vessels such as air receivers, steam receivers, gas generators etc. and their auxiliary equipment must be of good construction, sound material, adequate strength and free from any defect.

These pressured equipment should be operated properly and tested and examined regularly by MOM inspectors in accordance with the Boilers and Pressure Vessels Ordinance.

B) Equipment Maintenance/Certification

1) Fumehood (yearly) - see OSHE website under Guideline http://www.nus.edu.sg/osh/prog_Guidelines.htm

2) Autoclave (yearly) - see OSHE website under Guideline

3) Bio-safety cabinet (yearly maintenance/cert, OSHE website under Biological) http://www.nus.edu.sg/osh/prog_Guidelines.htm

4) Pellet Truck (yearly maintenance/cert)

5) Crane (maintenance/cert)

6) Explosive Power Tool (EPT) - user training/licence

7) TIG Welding Set. (yearly)

C) CHEMICALS

For ALL chemicals that are being purchased, request for a copy of the manufacturer's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of each chemical from the supplier. It is a LAW in Singapore.

D) ELECTRICAL

Where LIVE wires are exposed, they are required by LAW to be within an enclosure to which only adequate skilled persons have access.

In all instances, the connections of these items to the mains must be correctly made by a competent person.

Should it be found that the power leads on imported equipment do not conform with with the current Singapore Standard (brown-LIVE, blue-NEUTRAL, green with yellow - EARTH), it is wise to replace the original power lead with the Singapore Standard Pattern.
