Congratulations to Prof BG Englert (Provost’s Chair recipient) and A/Prof Christian Kurtsiefer (Dean’s Chair recipient). These Chairs are for a 3-year term (from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2012), and are bestowed in recognition of their excellent academic contributions to the Faculty and international recognition in their field of research.

Congratulations to Physics Safety Committee for receiving the NUS Annual Safety & Health Performance Award (ASHPA) in FY 2008/09. The team chaired by A/Prof Johan van der Maarel, Mr Teo Hoon Hwee (Co-chair) and Mr Wu Tong Meng Samuel (Asst Co-Chair) won the 4th consecutive Silver Award ($35,000) in the NUS Safety & Health Award Ceremony on 22 April 2009. This year there was no Gold Award in this category. The committee includes advisors
Asst/Prof Yan Jie and Asst/Prof Ramanathan Mahendiran, and members Mr Wong How Kwong, Mr Choo Theam Fook, Mrs Lee Soo Mien, Mr Lim Bun Siang, Mr Ng Tong Hoe, Mrs Phua Swee Wah, Mr Tan Choon Wah and Mr Foong Chee Kong. The departmental safety committee consistently upholds a very high safety standard in our laboratories and workshop. With strong support from the management, staff and students, the group has managed to help the department bagged the annual ASPHA award since its inception. Click here for more information.

 

We congratulate our colleagues who have mentored the following winning school projects at the recent Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) 2009. We also wish to thank the many other mentors who have put in considerable time and effort to mentor our SMP, SRP and SCIENTIA students. The Faculty appreciates the effort and encourages our staff to participate in these programmes to inspire our school students to do science with us.

Congratulations to Asst/Prof RUSYDI Andrivo for winning the NUS-Young Investigator Award for FY2008. His project title: Manipulation of new quantum states by atomic control of oxide layers for novel functionality. Excellent students are welcome to join his research group.
